GreenTech Americas 2020 will present the latest technologies and solutions in protected agriculture for the first time in Mexico

Author: GreenTech
  • Mexico, a world power in protected agriculture.
  • GreenTech Americas, an international event that will present the latest technology, trends and developments in protected horticulture for producing crops all year round.
  • It will be held from March 24 to 26, 2020, at the Congress Center, Querétaro Mexico.

Mexico, December 16, 2019.Mexico is a world power in protected agriculture, and GreenTech Americas 2020 will serve as the platform for all professionals involved in protected horticulture from the early stages of the horticulture chain to high-tech solutions for triggering high productivity for growers.

This event will be held for the first time in our country from March 24 to 26, 2020 in the city of Querétaro, Mexico. The goal is to meet the regional needs of growers and suppliers and believe that GreenTech Americas will be complementing the solutions and innovations for the horticulture sector of the Latin American region.

Organized by RAI Amsterdam and Tarsus México, GreenTech Americas 2020 will enable a greater exchange of knowledge, experiences, and success stories among suppliers of the horticultural industry from Mexico and other countries, with Central American, US, and Canadian growers.

Protected agriculture is currently gaining ground in Mexico, as it is carried out under conditions where growers can control some environmental factors, thereby minimizing the impact of climate change on crops using structures such as greenhouses, shade mesh, and high and low tunnels. It must be emphasized that this specialized system yields produce of excellent quality at any time of year, free of damage resulting from climate factors, let alone from pests and diseases.

According to the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), the state reporting the largest area subject to some type of protected agriculture is Sinaloa (9,000 hectares), where the main crop grown is Saladette tomatoes under shade mesh. Sinaloa is followed by Jalisco (7,713 hectares), 4,448 of which are used to grow raspberries in macro-tunnels. In the case of Querétaro, the past year saw a significant increase, with a production of more than 110,736 tons of produce grown under protected agriculture.

The Mexican Association of Protected Horticulture (AMHPAC) notes that Mexico is in sixth place worldwide for protected agriculture area, where greenhouses and mesh are used to cultivate crops such as tomatoes and peppers, while macro-tunnels are used to produce fruits such as cranberries and strawberries.

The AMHPAC also underscores that Mexico has seen a boom in the application of technical processes to its fields, since the country's 132 protected hectares grew to 50,900 hectares over 15 years, mainly in the states of Sinaloa, Jalisco, and Michoacán, which jointly contain 50% of the protected area nationwide.

In this regard, it is necessary to promote the implementation of protected agriculture throughout Mexican territory, since it has been shown to increase production yield, value in the fields, and encourage exports; furthermore, it satisfactorily addresses global consumption trends that demand sustainable, fresh, healthy, and ecological produce.

Taking into account the need to expand the market and strengthen Mexico's position as a world power in protected agriculture, GreenTech Americas 2020 will hold an event intended for growers and breeders; agronomists and consultants; agriculture professionals; professionals of the horticultural industry at all levels; soft fruit growers; universities, specialized educational institutions, and research centers; investors and banking entities; and federal and municipal government institutions and officials, among others.

“Protected horticulture is the fastest growing area for agricultural production in Mexico,” remarked José Navarro, CEO of Tarsus México. “Growers seek to improve their production processes with better greenhouse technology, including hydroponics systems and crop optimization systems,” he added.

In turn, Mariska Dreschler, Horticulture Director of GreenTech of RAI Amsterdam, stressed that GreenTech, as a global forum, must be present in the emerging markets of the world. “We want to promote a B2B platform that can meet the regional needs of growers and suppliers. In observing specific climates, grower needs, and consumer needs, for example, we believe that GreenTech Americas will be complementing the solutions and innovations for the horticulture sector of the Latin American region.”

GreenTech Americas 2020 expects a turnout of more than 1,500 visitors and will include the participation of leading national and international companies with the latest solutions and innovations for the horticulture sector in Latin America, such as: horticulture suppliers, knowledge and service; greenhouse equipment, climate and logistics; research and development; propagation and breeding; greenhouse construction; machines and equipment; crop protection, plant nutrition, and growing media; vertical farming; crossover industries (water, energy, plastics), among others.

GreenTech is the third event co-organized by Rai Amsterdam and Tarsus México following the successful launches in Mexico of Aquatech Mexico and Intertraffic Mexico.
